The Life and Work of Horst P. Horst

Born in Germany in 1906, Horst initially studied architecture in Hamburg and Paris before turning to photography. Influenced by the principles of Bauhaus and modernist architecture, his photographs are characterized by a perfect balance of form and light. His images are often described as “mathematical equations” with a focus on proportions and a fusion of classical and modern elements.

The Exhibition in Venice

Curated by Anne Morin in collaboration with Denis Curti, the exhibition features over 400 works, half of which have never been seen before. Along with vintage prints, the exhibition also includes archival materials such as magazines, sketches, and letters from famous figures like Coco Chanel and Salvador Dalí. The exhibition is divided into eight sections, each highlighting different aspects of Horst's life and work, from his early drawings and self-portraits to his iconic Vogue covers and portraits of celebrities.

A Deeper Look at Horst's Work

The exhibition offers a unique insight into Horst's approach to photography and his influences. From his interest in classical and neoclassical art to his experimentation with surrealism, visitors can see the evolution of his style and the impact he had on the fashion and art world. The exhibition also includes never-before-seen photographs of Venice, where Horst stayed in 1947 during the Biennale and Film Festival.
