Walk south from the Duomo and, before long, you’ll see it: a tower that seems to grow broader as it reaches for the sky. With its warm, textured façade and dramatic overhanging crown, Torre Velasca has a silhouette that is impossible to mistake.

Some see a medieval watchtower. Others see a giant mushroom. Either way, it is distinctly Milanese: confident, practical and full of character.

A tower with a story to tell

Torre Velasca rose from a city rebuilding itself after the Second World War. Designed by the architectural studio BBPR and constructed in 1958, in just 292 days, it brought a bold new presence to a part of Milan that had been damaged by wartime bombing.

At 106 meters tall, the tower was a statement of modern ambition. Yet its architects were also thinking about the city around it. The projecting upper floors are meant to recall the fortified forms of historic Lombard towers, including the Filarete tower at Castello Sforzesco. Look closely and you can sense that conversation between old and new: a modern skyscraper with a memory of medieval Milan.

The tower is named after the location it was built upon, Piazza Velasca, a historic square in Milan. The square is named after Juan Fernández de Velasco, a Spanish nobleman and governor of the Duchy of Milan, who ruled during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

The design was controversial when it appeared. It challenged ideas about what a modern building should look like, especially so close to the historic centre. Today, that singular shape has become one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

The beauty is in the details

The tower’s unusual proportions had a purpose. Its narrower lower section originally housed offices, while the wider upper seven floors contained apartments. The projecting residential levels created more space above, supported by the angled structural elements visible on the façade.

From the piazza, take a moment to follow those supports upwards. Notice the rhythm of the windows, the variations in the surface and the warm tones of the exterior. Torre Velasca rewards a slower look; its character comes from the details as much as from its silhouette.

It is also a reminder that Milanese design has never been confined to a single look. Alongside the elegance of the Galleria and the ornament of the Duomo, the tower offers something more robust: an architecture shaped by history, engineering and a willingness to be different.

A new chapter for a Milan icon

Over the years, Torre Velasca has remained a subject of affection and debate. Recognized as a protected building in 2011, it has since undergone a major restoration led by Asti Architetti, with work beginning in 2021.

The project has brought new life to the tower and its surroundings while preserving the presence that made it famous. Today, the building’s story continues with a mix of spaces, including offices and hospitality. The tower’s transformation adds another layer to its history, as Milan once again finds a way to adapt an architectural landmark for contemporary life.
