Luxury jewelry brand Tiffany & Co. has officially opened its first boutique in Milan's prestigious Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, beating out 10 other contenders for the coveted spot. This new location is not just a place to shop, but an immersive experience that seamlessly blends the brand's rich history with contemporary design.
Previously, the boutique was a Swarovski flagship store. The property went up for auction by the City of Milan in May 2024. Of the ten luxury brands that qualified to participate in the public auction, after 27 bids, the jewelry house closed the bidding process with a bid that more than sevenfold multiplied the starting price of €506,000. The final bid was recorded as €3.6 million per year.
Auctions are held at the City of Milan Real Estate Department. The auction mechanism was introduced by the City Council in 2019 to renew concessions for the most prestigious spaces in Milan's Salotto district, namely the shops overlooking the Octagon and the first three adjacent shopfronts on the four wings of the Galleria. To date, five shops have been awarded through this type of procedure: Armani, Fendi, Dior, Santoni, and Loro Piana.
Stepping into the boutique, visitors are greeted by a stunning mosaic floor dedicated to America, one of four that adorn the Galleria. This detail is not just symbolic, but a connection between the efficiency of Milan and the dreamy allure of New York City.
Once inside, the first thing to do is look up. The ceiling is adorned with four rare Favrile glass mosaics, created by Tiffany & Co. Studios in 1914 for the Marshall Field department store in Chicago. These pieces have never been displayed to the European public before, and their iridescent glow changes with the natural light, making it a true privilege to see them up close.
But the boutique is not just a tribute to the past. It is a continuous dialogue between different worlds. The space dedicated to designer Elsa Peretti showcases her iconic organic designs, while works by Michelangelo Pistoletto and pieces inspired by Gio Ponti speak to Milan in its native language, making visitors feel like welcomed guests rather than tourists.
One cannot help but be drawn to the ceramic installation by Peter Lane, with its intricate textures and subtle hints of the signature Tiffany Blue color. The Bird on a Rock pattern can also be found subtly incorporated throughout the space, waiting to be discovered by careful observers.
Following the light, visitors will find themselves on a glass staircase leading to the mezzanine level, where vintage pieces from New York are rotated throughout the year. Each visit may bring the opportunity to discover something new and unique.
A visit to Tiffany & Co. in the Galleria is not just about purchasing jewelry, but about taking the time to admire and appreciate the sensory experience that has been thoughtfully crafted. Every surface has a story, every reflection has traveled decades to reach this spot. In the end, isn't this the most valuable luxury of all?
