Milan, Italy, From April 15 to June 14, 2026 – The Cittadella degli Archivi of the City of Milan presents “The Purple Roses of Cittadella” and other events from Tuesday, April 14, at 6:00 PM, during Milan Art Week 2026.
Location: Cittadella degli Archivi del Comune di Milano
Via Ferdinando Gregorovius 15, Milan
The initiative brings together three projects that intertwine contemporary art, memory, urban transformation, and nature, helping to redefine the cultural and visual identity of one of Europe's most important archival centers.
The event centers on the donation to the City of Milan of the work “Rediscovering Munari” by artist Alberto Piña Hernandez, aka Albert Pinya, made possible thanks to the contribution of ACE, an integrated design firm. The work will become part of the Cittadella degli Archivi's permanent collection and will be installed in the internal garden, contributing to the redevelopment of the spaces and the entire Niguarda neighborhood.
The work of Pinya, an artist active on the international scene with long-standing ties to the Italian context, engages in this case with the figure of Bruno Munari, a Milanese artist, designer, and writer, to whom the work pays homage and whose materials are preserved at the Cittadella degli Archivi. The artist's practice is distinguished by a constant pursuit of experimentation and the expansion of pictorial language through the use of diverse materials, techniques, and registers. Central to her research is the theme of the face, a recurring element that becomes a narrative and symbolic device: “The face is the place where the gaze resides and through which we observe the world. The reflection of the soul,” states the artist.
Alongside the donation, the event unfolds through the presentation of two exhibitions that engage with the spaces and function of the Milanese archive hub.
From April 15 to June 14, 2026, the Cittadella hosts “Something new: lights, lines, shapes,” a solo exhibition by Sergio Limonta, organized in collaboration with the Building gallery in Milan. Invited to engage with the architecture and materials of the archive, Limonta presents eight previously unseen works spanning various fields of his recent research: from the “Legni,” “Metalli,” and “PVC” series, to a large, precariously balanced sculpture. Among the works on display, one was created using disused materials from the Cittadella, establishing a direct dialogue with the site and its function.
From April 15 to May 15, 2026, the same spaces will host the exhibition “LETTERS FROM THE HURRICANE” by Alfredo Rapetti Mogol, conceived and organized by Isorropia Homegallery and Galleria Ferrero Arte Contemporanea. The project presents a body of work in which writing transforms into a pictorial gesture, giving rise to a visual language of signs, codes, and layers. The works form an intense reflection on the contemporary condition, balancing tension and hope, emerging as a veritable hymn to peace. Among the key works are the installation “Three Butterflies” and a sequence dedicated to the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which gradually dissolves, evoking the risk of losing fundamental values.
The “The Purple Roses of Cittadella” project is completed by a planting and redevelopment project in the Cittadella degli Archivi garden, which will be enriched with 1,100 red ground cover roses, a grove of 12 tall maples, and over 500 shrubs, including thyme, dogwood, and viburnum.
“The Cittadella degli Archivi,” states Gaia Romani, Councilor for Civic and General Services, “confirms itself not only as a place of conservation and memory, but also as a cultural center and an incubator for citizen participation. I thank the artist Alberto Piña Hernandez for choosing our archive center as a place to pay homage to a great designer and writer like Bruno Munari. In recent years, the Gregorovius site has contributed significantly to the redevelopment of the entire Niguarda neighborhood, offering people an open, free cultural gathering place.”
