As summer draws to a close, a severe weather alert has been issued for parts of Northern Italy, including the regions of Lombardy, Liguria, and Piedmont. The alert, issued by the Department of Civil Protection in collaboration with the affected regions, is in response to a strong Atlantic disturbance that is expected to bring heavy rains and thunderstorms.
The alert, which is in effect for Thursday, August 28, also includes a yellow alert for the regions of Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, Valle d’Aosta, and parts of Piedmont, Tuscany, Lombardy, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna. The predicted weather conditions have the potential to cause significant damage and disruption.
According to the Department of Civil Protection, the disturbance is currently passing through France and will gradually move towards Northern Italy, bringing with it unstable weather conditions. This will result in widespread thunderstorms and heavy rains, which could lead to intense and persistent downpours, accompanied by strong winds and even hailstorms.
The alert is set to begin tonight, in the evening of Wednesday, August 27, with widespread rainfall expected in the regions of Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta, Liguria, Lombardy, and later in the afternoon on Thursday, it will extend to Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, and the central-northern areas of Tuscany. The forecast warns of intense downpours, frequent lightning, and strong winds, which could cause damage.
This severe weather alert is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of summer storms and the importance of being prepared. In recent years, Italy has experienced an increase in extreme weather events, from intense heatwaves to severe storms. As a popular travel destination, it is crucial for visitors to stay informed and take precautions to ensure their safety.
For those planning to travel to Northern Italy in the coming days, it is advised to check local weather updates and follow any warnings or instructions from local authorities. While it may be tempting to explore the beautiful outdoor areas of Lombardy, Liguria, and Piedmont during this time, it is best to exercise caution and avoid any risky activities.
As we say goodbye to summer and welcome the fall season, it is essential to stay updated on weather conditions and be prepared for unexpected changes.
