Meet your cooking instructor at their home in central Milan in the early morning. After introductions, take a 15-minute walk to the local market. As you browse the stalls, listen to the seasoned chef explain how to select the best produce.
Take the ingredients back to the chef’s home, where’ll you discuss the menu further over tea and coffee. After you’ve drained your cup, head to the kitchen, where preparation gets underway.
Start by learning how to make either fresh pasta or gnocchi, two Italian food staples. Find out how to mix and knead the dough to ensure the consistency is just right. Next, tackle a typical Italian meat dish such as saltimbocca alla romana or spezzatino. Receive guidance at every step from the experienced chef instructor.
Then, master the basics of making mouthwatering deserts. Depending on the seasonal produce available at the market, the dessert might consist of homemade ice cream, delectable fruit tart or crème caramel (sweet Italian pudding with eggs and caramelized sugar).
Once all the dishes are ready, sit down at the table and tuck into the 4-course feast you and your fellow classmates have produced. Pair it with two glasses of fine Italian wine; your cooking instructor is also a qualified sommelier and can talk you through the nuanced flavors as you drink.
Finish off the meal in typical Italian style with an espresso. Your experience concludes after lunch, but you’ll get to take home a recipe booklet and a diploma as evidence of your newfound cooking skills.
