Although I encourage “slow travel,” sometimes travelers are pressed for time and only have one day in Milan. Here are my recommendations for an overnight stay in Milan to visit the main attractions and experience an authentic visit.

What to See & Do

Duomo Milano

The Duomo Milan is the third largest cathedral in the world after St. Peter’s in Rome and the Cathedral of Seville. For a spectacular view of the city and even of the Alps (on a clear day), you can climb to the top of the Duomo with a spiral stone staircase of 919 steps. An elevator to the top is also available. Book tickets for Duomo Milano in advance or expect long lines.

Where to Shop

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Milano

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the heart of Milan. It is one of the oldest glass-covered galleries in Europe, but it is also a central meeting point and luxury shopping gallery. Inside, you will find luxury boutiques such as the original Prada store, and high end brands like Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.

What to See & Do

Sforza Castle

Next, head over to Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione which dates back to the 14th century named after Francesco Sforza, who transformed it into a ducal residence. In the castle, there is a museum of Milanese artifacts, medieval weaponry, tapestries and beautiful frescos in the residential rooms. Get the extra ticket to see Michelangelo’s, Pietà Rondanini and visit the annex with the prehistoric and Egyptian museums.

Where to Eat

Lunch at Bar Magenta

Bar Magenta was opened over 100 years ago and is still one of Milan’s most historic and iconic cafes. If you want a real Milanese experience, get a beer and one of their signature sandwiches. My favorite is “Il Campagnolo” with salami and provolone.

What to See & Do

Last supper Leonardo Da Vinci

Last Supper

The Last Supper, a.k.a. “Il Cenacolo Vinciano” by Leonardo Da Vinci, is one of the world’s most legendary and beloved works of art. Tickets sell out quickly; visitor numbers are limited, so you must book your visit at least 2 -3 weeks in advance.

Where to Eat

Aperitivo

Italians usually go out for an aperitivo after work. Most places offer a drink and snack buffet for about 10-15 euros or under. Popular drinks served at the aperitivo time are Campari and soda, L’americano, Spritz, Bellini, Prosecco or beer. Aperitivo can also be enjoyed with children with non-alcoholic drinks too: Crodino, Coke or Fanta (orange soda). Read more about our favorite pubs, bars, and cafes in Brera, Naviglio canal district, or Isola.

Where to Eat

Dinner at DOT

A perfect way to relax after a day of sightseeing. Specialized in Tuscan cuisine, DOT Chianti Street Food offers genuine specialties like Ribollita and Peposo.  Enzo, the Florentine chef behind it, makes weekly runs to small, independent growers and organic suppliers in Tuscany, providing organic wines, cheeses, and meats from the region.

What to See & Do

Brera Milano

An Evening Passeggiata

“La Passeggiata” is a leisurely stroll, usually after a meal. With friends, it’s a moment of companionship and dialog; alone, it’s a time of reflection and contemplation. Put your phone away and take in the atmosphere of Milan at night.
