Beyond the Runway: Five Classic Summer Sporting Events Worth Building a Trip Around

Summer is the time for travel. But it doesn’t have to be reserved only for rooftops and beaches. Why not opt for a slightly different adventure, for example, a historic sporting event?

But we’re not talking about sporting events where you turn in a jersey, watch people play football, and call it a day. We’re talking about more memorable events. Events that are tied to fashion, tradition, history, prestige, good food, and luxurious vibes.

Basically, most of them are full-day trips. People come from thousands of miles away; you get to see exquisite cars, celebrities, expensive horses, and everyone is friendly, and the party doesn’t stop when these events finish.

But finding such events is quite difficult for tourists because few of them receive mainstream global attention. That’s why we’ve decided to cover five classic summer sporting events that are actually worth building a trip around.

The Palio di Siena

If you’re a fan of horses or you love horse racing, then this is the perfect event for you. But we bet that you’ve never seen a race like the Palio di Siena. This is a historic race described as a bareback horse race around Siena’s Piazza del Campo.

The race is the climax of a four-day festival, which is held twice each year, on July 2 and August 16. It is local, and only some of Siena’s neighborhood districts compete.

Sadly, there is no official betting on this race. It is only for fun and entertainment. However, if you’re a horse racing fan and you still want to place a bet, you can always go for online betting on other popular races like Travers Day at Saratoga, even while watching the Palio di Siena. Saratoga horse racing events are quite different than this race, but that’s the point. You bet on the mainstream races after checking out online tips, while being present on a historic event that’s extremely eye-catching.

Horse racing is quite popular in Italy; in fact, this is a place where the first organized chariot races came from. People love to place bets on horse racing games, making them feel extra special, but if you plan on going to the Palio di Siena, make sure you book another racing event where betting is actually available.

What makes this event special? Well, it is the fashion, the location of the race, the history, the carnival, the food, and the fact that it is one of the world’s oldest horse races, dating back an estimated 800 years.

So, yeah, it is special.

1000 Miglia

Another choice is 1000 Miglia, an event that not many people have heard of, but it is spectacular.  This is a design exhibition, and several hundred vintage cars cross Italy together.

The 1000 Miglia is what happens when a road trip, a design exhibition, and several hundred vintage cars decide to cross Italy together. The event was born out of a speed race, which was held across 24 editions between 1927 and 1957. Today’s annual event is a regularity competition for historic cars, with eligible models that are actually connected to those original editions.

The cars are amazing. You get to see cars worth millions of dollars, and they travel through city centers and go on mountain roads, and plenty of car enthusiasts gather around. Yes, you can argue that this is not really a sporting event, but it is born out of one.

The 2026 edition ran from June 9 to 13, which was a five-day route, beginning and ending in Brescia with overnight stops in Padua, Montecatini Terme, Rome, and Rimini. We saw plenty of amazing cars, including classic Bugattis, Alfa Romeos, and Porsches, which perfectly blend in the small towns in Italy.

This event is also about fashion, even though there aren’t clear dress codes or rules. Everyone is in linen clothes, going for that retro and old-money style, making the vibes from this event even better.

The Cowdray Gold Cup

For a summer sporting weekend that feels refined without becoming stiff, Cowdray Park is difficult to beat.

The British Open Polo Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup is one of Europe’s leading high-goal polo competitions. The 2026 tournament began on June 24 and concluded with the final on July 19 at Cowdray Park in West Sussex, inside the South Downs National Park. It is played at the 22-goal level, meaning the teams include some of the sport’s highest-rated international players.

Up close, it involves horses accelerating, turning sharply, and carrying riders who are swinging wooden mallets while judging a moving ball and avoiding several other horses.

The Gold Cup final is the obvious date for first-time visitors because it combines the strongest competition with hospitality, picnics and the full social atmosphere. Yet earlier tournament matches offer a quieter introduction and a better chance to follow the teams before the final.

Travers Day at Saratoga

Now we move to the United States, with a special treat. Saratoga Race Course is one of those places where the sporting history is visible before anyone explains it.

The first organized Thoroughbred meeting in Saratoga took place in 1863, and the racecourse has since become the center of the city’s summer season. The 2026 meet runs from July 3 through September 7, offering 46 days of racing, 73 stakes, and 20 Grade 1 events.

The date to build a trip around is Travers Day.

The 2026 Travers takes place on August 29, with the $1.25 million race heading a program containing five Grade 1 events. The race traditionally brings together leading three-year-olds from the Triple Crown season and later-developing horses seeking to rearrange the division.

The Newport Bermuda Race

The Newport Bermuda Race is not a sailing event designed to remain conveniently visible.

The fleet leaves Newport, Rhode Island, and races 636 nautical miles across the Atlantic to Bermuda. Depending on the boat and conditions, the journey can take roughly two to five days, much of it beyond sight of land. The race is held every two years and traces its history to 1906, making it the oldest regularly scheduled ocean race.

The 2026 edition started on June 19 from Fort Adams, where a free waterfront festival allowed spectators to watch more than 150 boats begin the journey.

As a travel experience, the event works in two parts.

Newport offers historic mansions, harbors, restaurants, and the excitement of the start. Bermuda provides the finish, warmer water, and crews arriving with significantly less interest in looking polished than when they left.

So, which of these sporting events sound like they are worth building a trip around? There are no right or wrong answers here. It all comes down to personal preferences, things you like, and countries you want and can go to.
