The Art of Millinery: A Conversation with Sara Wendy

There’s a certain kind of magic in a well-crafted hat—the way it transforms an outfit, elevates confidence, and tells a story all its own. I first discovered Sara Wendy Studio on Instagram, and it was love at first sight. Her headpieces exude sophistication, drama, and that elusive, effortless glamour. When we arranged a shoot in London, I was beyond excited to meet the creative force behind these exquisite designs.

An Artist at Heart

Designer Sara Wendy and Model Yaasim Shukla
When I first met Sara Wendy, she was every bit the designer I imagined—tartan trousers, red lips, a black beret—chic and effortless, with an air of Vivienne Westwood. With a background in fine arts from UAL London and a deep appreciation for British and Italian millinery traditions, Sara seamlessly blends haute couture craftsmanship with a unique artistic vision. “My grandmother and her sisters worked at Borsalino,” she shared, eyes lighting up as she recounted the legacy that shaped her passion. “They told me stories of the hats they made traveling all over the world—even making it to Hollywood films! That was pure magic to me.” Sara’s love for handcrafted luxury is evident in every piece she creates. Her studio in Vercelli, near Milan, is her sanctuary—a quiet, creative space where she welcomes clients over tea and biscuits, crafting bespoke designs that become cherished heirlooms. Art, literature, music, and culture, each with their unique narratives and expressions, also fuel her creativity and drive her passion. She cherishes the rich tapestry of experiences and interactions that life offers, drawing from them the valuable insights and perspectives that shape her thoughts and actions. These inspirations not only enrich her personally but also echo through her work, adding depth and meaning to her creations. Craftsmanship Beyond Trends

During our London shoot, Sara selected two stunning hats for me to wear: one in striking blue and white and the other in bold cerise pink. The moment I put them on, I felt transformed—elegant, empowered, and effortlessly glamorous. The attention to detail in her work is undeniable, from the rich satin textures to the delicate veiling that adds a touch of mystery and allure. “Every hat has its own story,” Sara explained. “I source materials worldwide, sometimes using vintage fabrics from old milliners, or even sentimental pieces gifted by clients, like their grandmother’s lace. It’s about sustainability and giving new life to something cherished.” In Italy, she notes, the appreciation for handmade, tailored hats is not as widespread as in the UK. “People will spend on a luxury handbag or shoes, but not always on a bespoke hat. That’s why I adore the English market—there’s a real passion for millinery there.” Her reach, however, extends far beyond Britain. With clients from California to Finland and Spain to Germany, Sara’s bespoke creations are sought after worldwide. “The relationships I build with my clients make this work even more special. Many have become dear friends.”

Hats Fit for Every Occasion

We shot at The Ritz London, the perfect setting for Sara’s luxurious designs. As I walked through the grand halls adorned in her exquisite headpieces, I truly felt like a Bond girl—confident, glamorous, and chic. Strangers even stopped to admire the hats, proving their undeniable allure. For anyone looking to make a statement—whether at Ascot, a royal event, or a mother-of-the-bride moment—Sara Wendy’s designs are the epitome of timeless elegance. Her creations transcend trends, offering a touch of couture magic for women of all ages. I, for one, can’t wait for our next collaboration. Summer is just around the corner, and I’m already dreaming of the next show-stopping piece from Sara Wendy Studio.
