Contemporary art from 1900 on. A collection of significant donations by both artists and citizens, who left their art collections to the Civic Museums. The various collections are now housed in Museo dell Novecento. The museum itself is a work of architectural art, a zig-zag spiral of rooms and exhibition halls. The top floor restuarant Giacomo Arengarioin with it’s beautiful art deco style,  has a lovely balcony and view of the Piazza Duomo.

The Castle was named after Francesco Sforza, who transformed it into a ducal residence in 1450. But its origins date back to the second half of the 14th century, at the time of Galeazzo II Visconti.
At the castle museum you can see Michelangelo Buonarroti’s unfinished, Pietà Rondanini, the last work he was working on before his death. In the lower levels of the castle you can visit the prehistoric and Egyptian museum of works found during building as well as Egyptian works acquired by excavation of Achille Vogliano, Italian archaeologist.

Italian masterpieces from the XIV to the XX century such as: Raphael’s “Marriage of the Virgin”; Giovanni Bellini’s “Pietà”; Caravaggio’s “Supper at Emmaus”; and Bramante’s “Christ at the Column”.
There are six new halls dedicated to Italian paintings between XIII and XVI century; there is a collection of metaphysical paintings, and there is also the Maria and Emilio Jesi collection, which has been donated to the gallery.

Monumental Cemetery

Carlo Maciachini built the Monumental Cemetery between 1863 and 1866 at Porta Volta. The numerous monuments are made by a multitude of artists such as Giacomo Manzù, Luca Beltreami, Pietro Cascella, Mosè Bianchi, Francesco Messina, Medardo Rosso, Adolfo Wildt, Vincenzo Vela and Ettore Ximenes. Important citizens are buried here, such as Alessandro Manzoni, Pietro Mascagni, Arrigo Boito, Francesco Hayez, Carlo Forlanini, Maria Callas, Eugenio Montale, Elio Vittoriani, the General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa and many others.


The Municipal Archaeological Museum

It contains Greek, Italiot and Etruscan bronzes and pottery. One section is dedicated to the Roman Period in Milan. Another one is dedicated to recent excavations, and their relics, made in Palestine. There is also a interesting ancient coin collection.
