Gym review

Dear Readers,
A few words for visitors looking for a Gym in the Milan area. One thing to keep in mind while searching for a gym is that the Fitness Industry in Italy lags behind the USA, Canada, Australia and other Northern European countries. I would like to explain some of the difficulties you may encounter and then suggest a few of the best gyms.

One of the main differences is opening hours.  This can be a problem especially if you are looking for a gym to train in before work.  You will find that the majority of gyms open at 9:00 and close by 22:00 during the week.  Weekends can be even worse.  Another upsetting issue is daily entrance and short term membership fees.   In most downtown locations daily entrance fees are ridiculously high, anywhere from 25€ to 50€, for a single entrance. Weekly and monthly memberships are rarely or not offered at all.  (Unless you know someone.  Welcome to Italy!)  Finally, and probably, the most important issue is the quality (and quantity) of free weights and machine equipment for authentic weight resistance training.  Even the most expensive gyms do not often offer the best equipment.

In conclusion, many gyms are what I call soft fitness clubs committed to a specific type of client, if opening hours and quality of equipment are not an issue then just about any gym in Milan will be fine.  However, if you are a dedicated fitness athlete then please take a look at the list below of the best fitness gyms in the Milan area.
Hope to see you in the gym,
Pietro

Palestra Leonardo

The Leonardo gym offers a wide range of equipment from the beginner to the experienced body builder.  They offer a complete and well managed rehabilitation area which is very rare in Italy.  Daily entrance fees run about 20€.  All summed up this is a very nice gym, they are also close to the metro stop of Loreto, the only drawback however is probably parking, which is mission impossible.

The Sportsman Club is a chain of gyms that have gotten a good reputation in the past 30 years of activity in the Milan area. In all of the 7 affiliated clubs you will find weight resistance equipment that is complete and efficient.  They have good quality machines, clean bathrooms and locker rooms.

In Sportsman Clubs #1- #4 – #5 and #6 you will especially find a vast supply of free weights and decent machines.  (These gyms in particular rescued the patrons of the not forgotten but painfully departed Super Sport Gym, well known among bodybuilders for being the best hardcore facility in Milan.)  Officially they do not offer daily entrances but as a rule your first visit is free, from here you can usually work something out with the management.

Also for fitness enthusiasts the Sportsman Club #6 in the beautiful city of Como, is probably the best equipped of all the Sportsman Gyms. It’s worth taking a trip not only to see the lake!

This is small neighborhood gym but don’t let that influence your choice of gyms. They offer a full range of free weights, dumbbells from 1 to 71 pounds in both odd and even increments, highly unusual for a gym of this size, and lots of plates for bar bells.  They have all the basic machines and more. The locker rooms and bathrooms are not particularly elegant, but they are very clean.   Also they are one of the very few gyms who have a 12€ entry fee.
